Analyst, Rail Operations
Location:
Lombard, IL. This position will follow a hybrid work-from-home/office model with at least three days in the office weekly
Role Summary:
This job involves using data to improve rail operations. Key responsibilities include generating reports, analyzing KPIs, extracting and interpreting data, building dashboards, tracking cost savings, monitoring service quality, analyzing cost trends, and supporting the rail operations team.
The main areas of responsibility for this position are:
• Data-Driven Insights: Generate insightful reports and analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) and internal benchmarks to monitor performance and identify areas for optimization.
• Data Mastery: Extract, manipulate, and interpret data from our company's data warehouse and operational systems to create comprehensive analytical reports.
• Visual Storytelling: Develop compelling data models and dashboards using tools like Looker to effectively communicate findings and support informed decision-making across the organization.
• Cost Optimization: Calculate, track, and report on cost-saving programs designed to enhance operational efficiency and reduce expenditures.
• Invoice Management: Efficiently handle exceptions related to rail invoices, ensuring accuracy and timely resolution.
• Service Excellence: Monitor and report on railroad service quality, proactively addressing performance concerns with suppliers to ensure optimal service levels.
• Cost Trend Analysis: Perform detailed data analysis of cost expenditures and identify key trends to inform strategic decision-making.
- Team Support: Provide essential support to the Rail Operations Team in their daily activities and projects.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Forecasting and Predictive Analysis: Developing models to forecast future operational costs, service levels, or potential disruptions based on historical data.
- Performance Benchmarking: Conducting in-depth comparisons of railroad vendor performance against industry benchmarks or internal targets to identify best practices and areas for improvement.
- Root Cause Analysis: Investigating and analyzing data to identify the underlying causes of operational inefficiencies, cost overruns, or service failures.
- Automation of Reporting: Identifying opportunities to automate data extraction, manipulation, and report generation processes to improve efficiency and accuracy.
- Data Quality Management: Ensuring the accuracy and integrity of data used for analysis and reporting.
- Development of Ad-Hoc Reports: Responding to specific data requests from various departments to support decision-making on an as-needed basis.
- Geospatial Analysis: Utilizing mapping tools and spatial data to analyze rail network performance and identify potential bottlenecks or optimization opportunities.

Function-Specific Required Skills and Competencies:
Technical Proficiency: The candidate must be proficient in using Looker (BI), Excel/Sheets, and other analytical tools.
Data Visualization: Experience in creating dashboards and visualizations using tools like Looker (or similar platforms) is essential.
Project Management & Prioritization: The ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks effectively is necessary.
Required Minimum Years Experience:
- 2+ years of rail and/or ocean carrier intermodal operations experience preferred
- Experience with data analysis, reporting, and SQL is highly preferred
Required Minimum Education:
Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience preferred
