At Standard Machine we design and manufacture high-quality parts for critical industries including pulp and paper, mining, oil and gas, chemical processing plants, steel mills, marine applications, transportation, military, and aerospace.

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Sr. Design Engineer is responsible for custom product design including standards, bill of material support, process selection reviews, management of change involving product design, supplier component qualification and new product reviews as well as technical support for manufacturing and non-conformance reviews and action.

Key Responsibilities

Application of sound engineering concepts to designed product:

  • Develops accurate product design and specification of components in a cost effective, timely manner which meets engineering standards as well as intended customer market and applications.
  • Software utilization to prove design criteria meets intended application.
  • Creating drawings using Inventor
  • Communicates design requirements clearly and concisely to minimize production errors.
  • Develops specification of special tooling and/or processes that may be required for the accurate production of designed components and/or assemblies.
  • Develops specification of testing requirements to verify design parameters.
  • Develops efficient designs which are optimized to our production capacity and where possible, standard replacement parts (bearings, seals, filters, etc.).
  • Develops effective engineering specifications and component selection which meet customer application requirements and expectations.
  • Develops design and reverse engineering services which meet customer needs.
  • Develops accurate failure analysis translating into improved design.
  • Develops cost effective and efficient design of replacement parts with equal or where possible superior performance and durability.
  • Maintains engineering databases.

Provision of competent and knowledgeable engineering services that meets customer requirements and expectations:

  • Provides timely and accurate preliminary designs that meet customer application requirements and expectations for generation of quotations which follow sound engineering principles and meet customer needs.
  • Minimizes customer downtime due to efficient and accurate on-site engineering analysis of customer applications.
  • Displays solid understanding of drafting techniques and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) drafting standards.
  • Working knowledge of Standard Machine Quality system ISO9001.

Provides design and failure analysis in support of production:

  • Resolves conflicts between design specifications and manufacturing capabilities.
  • Provides timely and effective resolution of non-conformances when necessary.
  • Provides knowledge base for translation of engineering principles to manufacturing practice.

Qualifications

Our ideal candidate has 6+ years of experience and possesses the following education and competencies.

Education

  • Bachelor of Engineering (BEng), or Bachelor of Science in Engineering (B.Sc. Eng), majoring in Mechanical Engineering
  • Registered as an E.I.T (Engineer in Training) with APEGS

P.Eng qualification in Saskatchewan is considered an asset, but is not required.

Competencies

  • Experience in manufacturing and/or production facility.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills including conflict resolution.
  • Demonstrates strong organization and communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Inventor/Solidworks
  • Accuracy and expertise in failure analysis, software, and engineering processes.
  • Experience using proven processes and methodologies such as 5S, FMEA, RAM, LCC, RCM, and CMM preferably in an industrial or manufacturing setting.
  • Adaptive problem-solving techniques including developing new solutions through analytical, interpretative, evaluative, creative, and innovative thinking.
